Mad March Hair Day

On the last day of term, the children raised funds for Diabetes UK. 


Sophie Bingham gave an excellent presentation on diabetes; then she took part in the Glee Club's extravaganza. Mr. Reeves then led the violinists who played, amongst other songs, the Can Can. Then, Matt - the Station Hairdresser - gave Mr. Hawker a Mad March Haircut live on stage.

Easter Bonnet Parade

Today, many children came to school dressed in their Easter Bonnets.


As with the egg decorating earlier this week, clearly the children had invested many hours in decorating their head dresses.


The bonnets were judged and the worthy winners received an Easter Egg each.

Today, the children brought their decorated eggs into school. Many of the eggs were set in dioramas. It was hard to judge which was the best.

Sport Relief 2012

Today, the whole school raised funds for Sport Relief.


The children and adults all gave €1 to wear red for the day and then they all took part in various challenges. One challenge was hoola-hooping. Phew! What fun!


The children all learnt about the serious side of Sport Relief too and, with thanks to Mr. Goodwin and Year 6, understood the importance of having clean water to drink.

Year 2 Week 12 2012

In literacy this week, the children have been performing poetry and writing their own dinosaur poems.


In numeracy they have been learning to find key information and the right number operation to solve word problems.


In art, we have been making dinosaur tiles, which we are using to print with.


Next week, we are hoping to end our topic with a dinosaur dig!

Year 1 Week 12 2012

In Literacy, we have been writing our own versions of ‘The Frog Prince’. We talked about changing the setting as well as some of the events throughout the story. The children had some fantastic ideas and have produced some very good versions of the story.


In Numeracy, we have been counting in 2s, 5s and lO s. Not just forwards, but backwards as well, and starting at different numbers. We have also been problem-solving and have started some more work on learning to tell the time.


Well done to all the children for completing their Sport Relief challenge! Mrs. Nyman’s class had to hula hoop for 1 minute and Miss Mead’s class had to balance a quoit on their heads for 1 minute while doing a relay race.


Please keep sending in the titles, authors and prices of the books your child would like in the library.


This week we say a sad farewell to Mrs. Cubbin and we wish her the best of luck in the future. Mrs. Sharrock will now be working alongside Mrs. Nyman and we welcome Mrs. Hawes, who will be working alongside Miss Mead.


Homework: For Literacy, the children have to decide if the sentences make sense. They then have to cut out the words of the sentence and stick them in the right order. In Numeracy, children are counting in 2s, 5s and l0s.

Year 3 Visit The Dog Section

Today, Y3 visited the Dog Section where the children consolidated their knowledge of mammals' teeth.

They saw how attack dogs’ teeth are important in guarding the Barracks.

The Section’s staff was impressed by the children’s understanding of nutrition, the functions of the different types of teeth and teeth cleaning.

FS1 Week 11 2012

This week we have been learning about a Fijian folk legend. Ask your child to tell you about the story. See if they can remember the characters from the story. We have listened to Fijian music and we have also enjoyed tasting Fijian bread for snack. Thank you to the Lion and Elephant Groups for making it for us to try. If you would like the recipe, let us know. Next week we will be learning about Spring, so if you have any books at home, please send them in for us to look at.

Journals: Please remember to write in your child’s journal if you have anything to share with us. It might be they are excited that family members are coming to stay. It could be they have done something for the first time or it could be they have had a bad night’s sleep and they may be a bit tired. All information put into your child’s journal is useful information for us, and helps us build a better picture of their development together. Thank you.

There are also pages of the back of the journal for you to complete at home so you can keep a ‘snap shot” of their development too. March’s pages are 119 and 120 so have a go. We look forward to seeing what the children do.

Easter celebrations: The Easter Bonnet Parade will be on 28th March. Please make a bonnet at home for your children to wear to the parade. There will also be an egg decorating competition and we will be having a cake stall too, so make sure you have some ingredients in to send some cakes into school. Thank you.

Stay and Play: On the last week of term, Stay and Play will be after the Easter Bonnet Parade on the Wednesday, not on the last day of term.

Tea Towels: If you have any spare tea towels at home could you please send them in for us to use. We have a fantastic new kitchen preparation area for the children to use in the Red Room. Have a look, when you visit us for stay and play.

Parents Meetings for FS1 children will be after Easter as this will allow for the new children who joined the setting in January to have their full term in school before we chat to you. Date to follow.

FS2 Week 11 2012

We have been extremely busy this week “making and baking”. Each child is looking forward to making Mothering Sunday special for their Mum.

Dance. Music and Food from a Variety of Cultures - Unfortunately, we have not received any offers yet from adults who are able to share some dance, music or food from their culture, with our F52 children. Please contact us as soon as possible if you can help us in any way, before Easter.

Healthy Lunch Boxes - In FS2, we are learning about the importance of keeping healthy and how we can achieve this with exercise, healthy eating etc. As a school, we are regularly looking for healthy lunch boxes for our children. We would like to take this opportunity to ask you not to send sweets to school with your child.

Year 1 Week 11 2012

This week in Literacy, we have been looking at The Frog Prince. We have been reading the book, talking about the characters and setting as well as retelling the story using puppets.


In Numeracy, we have been looking at addition and have been solving problems including finding missing numbers.


In topic we have been continuing with ‘On The Move’. We have been testing different materials to see which would make the best ramp. We had a range of different results depending on the car used!


The library is still closed for refurbishment, and we are all looking forward to visiting again when it is finished. As part of the refurbishment, each child has been allocated Euros 12 to spend on a book of their choice for the library.


Please look at home (one website to use is www.lovereading4kids.co.uk) and choose a book. Write the name of the book and the price in your child’s journal and the book will be ordered. Each child will then have a chance to write a message and who chose the book inside the front cover before it goes into the library.


Homework:


For Literacy, the children have to choose their favorite book and identify the main characters and the setting.


In Numeracy, children are solving problems including 1 more and 1 less, looking for patterns in their work and matching pairs to make 10.

Year 2 Week 11 2012

In literacy this week, the children have independently written a non chronological report about dinosaurs; using all the skills they have been taught.


In numeracy they have been learning about division as sharing, and applying what they know to solve a range of word problems.


In science the children have used a range of materials to find out about different forces.


We are looking forward to meeting you all next week at Parents Evening. Please look in journals for a slip with the date and time of your appointment, if you have not already received it.

Year 3 Week 11 2012

The children have been very busy this week - doing assessments in Literacy and Numeracy!


They have readily grasped the opportunity to show just how much they’ve been learning.


For homework we would like the children to ‘do’ another area for their learning project.


There is also a numeracy task to complete.

Books At Bedtime

On Friday 02 March, we held our Books at Bedtime event.

Many mums, dads and carers supported our Foundation Stage specialists. Thank you!

The children moved around 5 ‘stations’, with fun books being read on 3 of the stations and cocoa or a book shop being available on the other two.

Every child went home with a new book to try.

Sport Relief

In return for a donation of just €1 to Sport Relief, children may wear any wacky, red-themed costume on Friday 23 March.

Parents and carers are invited to attend our Sports Relief Challenge assemblies on the 23rd too:

• Years 1 and 2 from 0945 to 10.30 hrs;



• FS 1 and 2 from 10.45 to 11.30 hrs;



• Years 3 to 6 from 13.15 to 14.00 hrs.

Parents’ Evenings

Next week, our teachers will meet with parents and carers to discuss each child’s progress.

These events are always tightly-run affairs and we ask for your co-operation by arriving 5 minutes before your allotted appointment time.

We also ask that you respect the need for other parents to discuss their children’s schooling.

Sugary Drinks in School

The majority of parents and carers send their children to school with plain water to drink.


Recently, there has been an increasing incidence of fizzy drinks being brought to school, some of the ‘power’ drink variety, which contain amounts of sugar designed for adults.


Such drinks increase the risks of tooth decay and painful extractions in children significantly.

Bielefeld Youth Club Easter Activity

On the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th of April, the Bielefeld Youth Centre has an Easter Activity programme.


The programme is a rich collection of trips and activity days.


Application forms are available from the School Office and, when completed, they should be returned to the Army Welfare Service.

FS1 Week 10 2012

This week, we have been learning about Little Red Riding Hood and the children have been very good at using their voices to impersonate The Big Bad Wolf and Grandma. This is a good story to talk to your children about stranger danger.

Some of the children thought that it was not a good idea for Little Red Riding Hood’s mum to send her on her own to walk through the woods to Grandma’s house on her own! Next week, we will be learning about a Fijian folk story and even tasting some Fijian food at snack time.

Book Bags: please remember to check your child’s book bags/ journals for letters and things that they have done in the Setting during the day.

EDC is now full. We can only take 24 children in the afternoon, due to staffing arrangements. If you require a place for your child, we are now operating a waiting list system and we will let you know once a space becomes available.

Journals: please remember to write in your child’s journal, if you have anything to share with us. Year 1 Week 10 2012

This week, in Literacy, Year 1 has been continuing with its work on fiction and non-fiction books. We have been looking at reports of vehicles and have been writing our own to tell people about the vehicles we made for the Jolly Postman.


In Numeracy, we have been looking at subtraction and addition. We have been using number lines and objects to work out answers.


The library in school is being refurbished at the moment, so we are unable to use it. As part of the refurbishment, every child in the school will have the opportunity to choose a book to go in the new library. A letter will be sent home with further information about this and a website the children might like to look on is http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/.


Homework:


This week for Literacy, the children have to sort the books into fiction and non-fiction. For Numeracy, they have to use what they have learnt in class this week to find the answers to the addition and subtraction number sentences.

Year 2 Week 10 2012

Year 2 has had another very busy week this week and the children have been working extremely hard.


In literacy we have been writing about dinosaurs and using lots of ‘wow’ words to describe them. Some of the children have also brought in some interesting books and other items about dinosaurs to share with the rest of the class.


PE this week has been all about how dinosaurs move and we have had some interesting examples.


In numeracy, we have had lots of fun learning about capacity. We have taken their learning outside to involve practical lessons and lots of water!


The children have been looking at different forces in Science. Could children play with play dough (if they have some), please, to see how objects change shape.

Heroes and Villains Disco

On Friday 02 March, we held a Super Heroes and Villains Disco.

There were some very shiny and shady characters about, including this famous person. Do you know who it is?

We thank Mrs. Durban, and her team of helpers, for arranging this very special event.

We also thank the Y5 and Y6 DJs for keeping us all entertained.

Spend our Book Budget!

Parents and carers, we ask you to invest your precious time in reading to, and with, your children every evening. You should find a suitable book in your children’s Book Bags.


To make reading books even more exciting at school, we are refurbishing our Library and we invite your children to suggest their favourite book, or books, for us to buy, up to the value of £12.


Children who suggest books that we buy for the new Library will have the chance to inscribe a suitable message.

Year 4 Swimming

Miss Byron's Year 4 children will start their swimming lessons next Thursday, the 15 March.


Children should come to school in their usual uniform and bring their swimming kit. Children will not be allowed to swim in goggles. 


A plastic carrier bag is useful for wet costumes and towels. Children often like a light and healthy snack, to consume after swimming.


Our other Year 4 class will swim later this term.

Heroes and Villains Disco

On Friday 02 March, the school held a disco with the theme of Super Heroes and Super Villains.

Many villainous characters attended. Thankfully, just as many heroes were there to save us!

We would like to say, 'Thank you,' to all of the adults who helped out on the night and we send special thanks to Mrs. Durban for organising the event.

We would like to publish photos of your children in our newsletters, on our website and in the Sixth Sense.


We will assume that you are happy for us to do so. 


If you are not happy, please email sce.bielefeld@sceschools.com, with the email title No Photos, telling us your children’s names and classes.


Alternatively, you can write to the school or call into the School Office.

Espresso Login

Your child’s login details, for the excellent Espresso educational resource, are printed inside your child’s Learning Journal. Service Children’s Education provide your family with home access to Espresso free of charge.

Likewise, you and your child can access Education City free using the login details also in your child’s Learning Journal. Home access to Education City normally costs parents £30 a year!

Both websites are valuable for casual learning, catch-up learning and periods of illness / school closure due to holidays and bad weather.

Child Collections

We ask parents who are collecting their children at the end of the school day to stand in the seated area, by the Key Stage 1 Playground Doors, to one side of the doors please.

Den Making

As the better weather approaches, your children will have even more chances to be creative at play times. Den-making is a fabulous summer activity.


If you have any spare duvets or bed sheets, which are clean and in good condition, please send them to school in a carrier bag marked for the attention of Mrs. Street.
