FOBS’ Olympic Games Logo Competition
Did you watch the Olympic Flame arrive from Greece? Have you been watching the torch bearers run (or walk) with the Olympic Torch around Great Britain?
We hope that you will appreciate that you are watching history in the making. The last time that London held the Olympic Games was way back in 1948 and many things have changed since then; just have a look at some of the old video clips and pictures of the time!
We are going to be holding our own Friends of Bielefeld School (FOBS) Olympic Games Event, before the end of term, and we would like you to design an original logo or picture that can be used on our letters and posters.
If you would like to take part, you need to complete your entry by Fri 15 Jun and send it in to the School Office. It must be no bigger than A4 size and must have your name and class clearly written on the back of your entry.
Of course, no competition would be fair without some Olympic prizes, so start planning your original and interesting designs now and maybe the Olympic Flame will give you the inspiration to be an Olympic winner. Remember, just like our Olympic athletes, “If you’re not in it, you can’t win it”!
Older children might like to download and use the excellent Paint.net graphics programme. We are starting to use it at school, and it’s free!

Year 2 Week 22 2012
Wow, another very busy half term has flown by!
Our assessments are now finished and Miss Cunningham and I are very proud of all our children. They have worked very hard. We will now enjoy marking all of the written work that the children have completed.
As mentioned last week, the assessments levels will be entered onto our end of year reports, which will be sent to parents during the next half term.
We are asking the children to do some holiday reading and we are giving them a book review sheet to fill in, so that they can comment on features of the book that they like or dislike.
We hope that you all have a very enjoyable holiday and we look forward to seeing you all in a week or so.

Sun Precautions
![]() |
| Sun Protection Whilst Learning |
At last, the sun has appeared in Germany! Now that we’re hot, we must be especially bothered to Slip on a T-shirt, Slop on suntan lotion and Slap on a hat. Slip, Slop, Slap!
To protect your children from ultraviolet radiation, we encourage you to ensure that: their shoulders are covered, that you apply suntan lotion before they come to school (avoiding the eyes) and that they have a hat which protects their face.
A hat with a shade avoids the need for sunglasses.
Should your child burn easily, please come to school to reapply suntan lotion at lunch time.
We will encourage children to be still and seek shade, especially at the hottest time of the day, and to drink plenty of still water.
Poet Visit - Years 3 to 6, Attention!
The children in years 3 to 6 will now be visiting Blankenhagen School next Wednesday (30 May) to share in the visit of a published poet.
If you have not already returned the permission slip, please could we have this by Mon 28 May? In the associated letter, we also asked for a €2 contribution towards the costs of the visit and this would also be gratefully received.
A reminder about the day: we will be leaving school at 9am and not returning until 3pm, so ALL children will need a packed lunch on this day.

Year 2 Week 21 2012
Our assessments are going well and the children seem to be enjoying them! These will be used together with our on-going teacher assessments, to determine the ‘level’ that each child is working at. This information will be shared with parents in the end of year reports, which will be sent out during the next half term.
It is important that, during the hot weather, all children have a named water bottle and sun hat that they can use at break times. It would be helpful if sun cream bottles could also be named.
We have had lots of fun in PE this week playing team games.
In science, the children have been planting seeds and finding out what makes them grow.
Next Thursday is a “mufti day” in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. The children are being encouraged to wear red, white, or blue for the occasion.
Our home work this week is related to our “Night time” theme. Please see the homework sheet for details.

Harz Residential - Just a reminder that all consent forms for the Harz Mountain residential trip need to be returned before the end of half term. All outstanding payments also need to be paid by this day (Thu 31 May). The total cost of the trip is €240. If you have any difficulties in making this deadline for payment, please contact us.
Creative Homework - The outline for this term’s creative homework was sent out on Monday with the children. There are 2 options for the children to choose from and both options have 2 parts to the homework: a model and a piece of writing. If you have any questions about the homework please do not hesitate to get in touch.
The deadline for the homework is Mon 02 Jul, which may seem a long way off, but some parents fed back in the questionnaire on homework that they would like more time to be able to gather resources and complete research. We don’t anticipate that the homework will take 5 weeks but the extra time will enable the children to think about their project and ask for help in school, if they need it.

The children are having lots of fun learning about ‘The Rainbow Fish’. This week in literacy, we have been re-telling the story.
Thank you very much for all the shoe boxes. The children have used these to create fantastic 'under the sea' scenes using collage.
They have also created some beautiful clay sculptures of sea creatures which, together with their boxes, they have used to retell the story.
In numeracy, we have been solving problems by grouping numbers in different ways.
Homework - This week, we are sending home a creative homework project linked to our topic on water. You will find more information in your child’s homework folder.
Please could you send sun hats and sun cream into school with your child during this lovely hot weather?
Also, every child was given a water bottle this week. Please send this into school every day too. However, we ask that they are only filled with water, as the children do use them while they are working, and accidents do happen!

FS1 Week 21 2012
We have been preparing this week for our Queen's Jubilee Party. We have made party hats/ crowns, bunting and even started planning menus for our celebration. If you have a look in the Green Room, we even have a room from Buckingham Palace, and sometimes the “Queen” even pops in for a visit and gives us a royal wave from her thrown. We have even been practising our curtseys and bows.
Hot weather rules - As it is now very hot, all children need to bring a sun hat. This should be with them every day. They should also have sun cream applied before they come to school. We will be unable to let them play outside if they do not come to school ready for the hot weather, as it is unsafe for them to play out in the sun unprotected. EDC children need to bring in their sun cream (with their name on) and hand it into the staff. You also need to complete the Sun Cream Slip. If you need another copy, please ask.
Stay and Play - Stay and Play will be cancelled next week. The school is closed for children, as it is a staff training day.
Cooking ideas - As we are busy improving our snack menu and cooking ideas, we would like to see if you have any favourite recipes that you would like to share with. Please remember they need to be simple ones and things that are quick and easy to prepare. We look forward to seeing what delicious delights you send in. Thank you.
Snack reminder - If you have not paid your snack bill yet, please do so as soon as possible. If the bill is not paid by the end of term, it will be added to your next bill.
Photographs - Your child’s photograph proofs are now here. If you would like to buy the photographs, please make sure you return the plastic envelopes and money by Thu 14 Jun.
Important Dates - On Fri 1 Jun, the school is closed for an INSET day; this is the day before the half term break. The half term holiday is from Mon 4 Jun to Fri 8 Jun. The school closes for the summer holiday on Fri 20 Jul. Please note, there will be no EDC; school closes at 12.30.
Please also note the change of date for our party. We will be holding an FS Jubilee Party before the end of half term, on Thu 31 May (last day of term) and we will be asking the children to come along wearing red, white and blue, or any combination of the colours. So please keep your eyes open for those colours whilst you are shopping.

Chicken Pox
Chickenpox has returned to school.
Before the red rash appears, you or your child may have mild flu-like symptoms including: feeling sick; a high temperature (fever), of 38ºC or over; aching, painful muscles; headache; generally feeling unwell and loss of appetite.
The NHS website advises that, if your child has Chickenpox, you must ‘inform their school or nursery and keep them at home while they are infectious, which is until the last blister has burst and crusted over. This usually takes five or six days after the rash begins.’

FoBS Olympic Games Family Night
Well, the Olympic Flame has arrived in the UK, so it’s time to start thinking of arranging our FoBS Olympic Games Family Night.
If you are able to help and/or you have some great ideas for the event, please come to our first planning meeting on Tuesday 29 May at 15.15 hrs in Foundation Stage 1.
It’s hard to believe that it is 8 years since we held the last Olympics Games Night, so we definitely need some new ideas!
This will be the last FoBS event of the current academic year, so let’s make it a good one. Thank you, Mrs Durban

School Lunch Bills
We would like to say a very big, ‘Thank you,’ to all of our parents and carers who pay their lunch bills by cash directly into the School Office. Payments of exact amounts, without the need for us to give small change, is appreciated especially.
Regrettably, we are still unable to collect lunch bill payments by direct debit from bank accounts, due to a continued shortage of specialist staff.
If you are worried, at all, about your child(ren)'s outstanding lunch bill, please contact our understanding and friendly office staff. They will do all they can to help you.

FS1 Week 20 2012
We have been continuing with our topic of Holidays. This week we have been busy looking at different countries and what the weather is like in these places.
We have also been very busy completing science experiments this week; we have made guitars and aeroplanes. But the best experiment of all was when the children helped Mrs. Citrine make butter from cream. It made their arms ache, but eating it on crackers made it all worth while.
Stay and Play - Don’t forget that stay and play is on every Friday from 11-12.30. We now have lots of children asking, “Where is my Mum/ Dad?” so please join us if you can for the whole session or just pop in for 10 minutes. It would be nice for your child to show you exactly what they do when they are at school rather than a popular answer to “what have you done at school today?” - “Nothing.”
Magic Rainbow moments - The Magic Rainbow Moments are starting to come in. The children are very proud of their achievements and really enjoy sharing them with their group. If you haven’t sent in one yet, please try to, as it is a valuable part of their learning and it will go into their learning journey after it has been on display for everyone to read. If you need another slip, please ask your child’s key worker.
Cooking ideas - As we are busy improving our snack menu and cooking ideas, we would like to see if you have any favourite recipes that you would like to share. Year 2 Week 20 2012
As we said in last week’s newsletter, we will be using the SATs tests as part of our assessment, to inform us of the progress the children are making. The SATs will start next week and continue the week after.
This week, we have been learning a bit more about Night Time. The children have been making fact pages about their favourite nocturnal animals and also creating collages of a street scene at night.
In literacy, the children have been trying to use direct speech, ambitious vocabulary and interesting connectives within their writing. We have also encouraged them to extend their sentences by adding more detail.
In numeracy, the children have been learning to add two digit numbers by partitioning and also about finding a number from a set of objects, using fractions such as 1/2, ¼ and ¾.
For homework this week, we are asking the children complete some mixed numeracy questions.
Just a reminder that PE continues to be on a Thursday and a Friday. Now that the weather is getting warmer, the children will be able to do PE outside, so we would like to ask that they have appropriate footwear for this.

Year 1 Week 20 2012
In Literacy this week, we have been reading, ‘The Rainbow Fish’. The children really enjoyed the book and have been busy describing the setting and the characters.
In Numeracy, we have been adding and subtracting 1 and 2 digit numbers. The children are getting very good at solving by counting on and back on number lines and hundred squares.
Thank you for sending shoe boxes into school. If you do have any extra boxes we would be grateful if you could send them into school for anyone unable to find one.
Homework - This week the literacy activity is to describe the under the sea setting picture in your child’s folder using adjectives, e.g. cold, colourful, sandy. The Numeracy homework is to find pairs of numbers with a given total or difference.

FS2 Week 20 2012
We have enjoyed another busy week in FS2, finding out more about life in an African village. Thank you for the related books that you have sent to school.
Water Bottles - The Naafi has kindly donated a water bottle to every child in FS2. Each bottle has been named with a permanent marker pen. Please ensure your child brings this water bottle to school every day. Thank you.
FS2 Celebration Assembly - All FS2 children will be participating in our Celebration Assembly on Friday 25th May. Please come along to support your child. “Curtains Up” at 10.10 am. We look forward to sharing a drink and biscuits with you afterwards.
Super Writers in FS2! - Our children have many opportunities to write independently, both inside and outside, throughout each day. This week, all FS2 children have also been given a new, “I am a Super Writer!” book. Each child will regularly record independent writing in this book. Please continue to value any independent writing done at home, giving particular praise for correct letter sounds that your child has written in words, without any help.

| Brackwede Woods This Week |
Our planned return trip to the woods next week will have to be postponed until the following Monday unfortunately (all things being well). Your permission slip will carry over to this date, unless you need to inform us otherwise.
Harz Residential - Many thanks for the wonderful turnout on Wednesday – it was lovely to see so many of you. We hope that the presentation was informative. However, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Information sheets have been sent home today with those children whose parents were unable to attend.
Martinschule visiting - On Monday we will be visited by the children of our German partner school. The children will be spending the morning with us to practise their English and for our pupils to practise their German. We’re sure that lots of fun will be had!
English Homework - This week’s English homework is to practise retelling their Robin Hood story orally. Your child will have brought home a plan with them this weekend and they need to practise using this to retell their story in full sentences, using interesting vocabulary. This will form the basis of a piece of writing that they will be doing next week.
Archery, Year 4 Tudor Studies
As a part of their Tudor period studies, Y4 visited Blankenhagen School this week where Mrs. Layhe-Humpheys gave up her free time to teach Mr. Layhe-Humpheys’ children about archery.
We counted the children out of school. And we counted them all back in again!
Year 1 Week 19 2012
Another busy week in Year 1!
In Literacy, following on from our walk around the camp, we have been writing a recount. The children worked hard to use time connectives to link their sentences. In Numeracy, we have been doubling numbers, finding pairs that total 10 and 20 and also solving subtractions by finding the difference. We have also continued our topic about Water by learning about Grace Darling in History.
Homework - This week’s literacy activity is to write a recount. Although the title says to ‘Recount A Day In School’, it can be changed to a recount of Saturday or Sunday. Please encourage your children to include answers to When? Where? Who? What? and Why? in their sentences. Numeracy homework is to complete the number sentences to total 10 and solve the corresponding subtraction fact.
Please make sure PE kits are in school each week; we have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Year 2 Week 19 2012
In Year Two, we use the SAT tests as one of our assessment tools, to inform us about the progress that the children are making. The tests are carried out in a very low key way as part of our daily classroom routines. The assessments cover writing, reading and maths and we are planning to complete them over the last two weeks of this half term.
This week, we have been learning about night time. The children have been finding out about people who work at nighttime, nocturnal animals and about why we have night and day. Please talk to your child about night time and help them to think about things that happen at night time.
In literacy, we have been learning to write an interesting character description, which describes what a character looks like and how they behave.
For homework this week, we are asking the children to write a short description about a favourite character, family member or pet. We hope that they will remember to use capital letters and full stops and interesting vocabulary to describe characteristics.
In numeracy, the children have been learning to tell the time and to add two digit numbers by partitioning.
Just a reminder that PE continues to be on a Thursday and a Friday. Now that the weather is getting warmer the children will be able to do PE outside, so we would like to ask that they have appropriate footwear for this please.
FS1 Week 19 2012
Topic - Our new two week topic is Holidays. This week we have been looking at where we are going and how are we going to get there. We have seen busy in the ‘travel agents’ booking our favourite destinations and getting ready to enjoy the sun. Disneyland has been a very popular choice; surprise, surprise. We have also had a fantastic “round the world feast” for snack today, thank you to all the key workers that have been busy at home making the delicious treats.
Spare clothes - If you have had any school clothes sent home as your child needed changing, could you please return them as soon as possible as we have none left in our cupboard. Also, if you have any clothes that your children have outgrown, then please send in any pants, socks, trousers, tops as they will be very much appreciated.
Stay and Play – Don’t forget that Stay and Play is on every Friday from 11-12.30. You are more than welcome to join us for the whole session or just pop in for 10 minutes. It would be nice for your child to show you exactly what they do when they are at school rather than a popular answer to “what have you done at school today?” “Nothing.”
Magic Rainbow Moments - Please fill in a slip to tell us what your child has been learning with you at home, our Magic Moment board needs updating, so send one in for your child to talk to their group about and then they can add it onto the board. We look forward to reading all the exciting things they have been up to.
Cooking Ideas - As we are busy improving our snack menu and cooking ideas, we would like to see if you have any favourite recipes that you would like to share with. Please remember they need to be simple ones and things that are quick and easy to prepare. We look forward to seeing what delicious delights you send in.
Important Dates - Friday 1 June school is closed for an INSET day, the day before the half term break. Half Term Holiday is Monday 4 June to Friday 8 June. The FS1 phonics workshop is coming soon, further information to follow.
Don’t forget - We will be holding a FS Jubilee Party before the end of half term and we will be asking the children to come wearing red, white and blue, or any combination of the colours. So, please keep your eyes open for those colours whilst you are shopping.
FS2 Week 19 2012
Thank you very much for the “donations” of large boxes. The children are thoroughly enjoying making large animals for our Outside Environment.
Learning about Africa - The children have been looking carefully at, feeling and tasting a variety of fruits from the story “Handa’s Surprise”. They have also recorded which fruits were liked, when eaten, on a Pictogram and a Tally Chart.
Outside Learning - Please ensure that your child has adequate clothing and protection for hot, sunny weather, (e.g. a hat), and also for colder, wet weather (e.g. a raincoat) every day.
Keeping Hydrated - We are actively encouraging our children to drink water regularly throughout the day, particularly now that the weather is getting warmer. Please encourage your child to bring a bottle each day, which can be refilled with water during the day.
Thank you.

Year 5 Week 18 2012
Topic – ‘Going Green’ - Just to let you know that this half term’s creative homework project will be based on the theme of ‘Tropical Rainforests’ – more details to follow soon!
Harz Residential – week beginning 18.06.12 - As you know, the residential for the Y5 children is not far away. To provide you with more information and the opportunity to ask any questions, there will be a parents’ meeting at 3.20pm next Wednesday (9th May) in the music room. We hope to see lots of you there. Also on the topic of the residential – just a reminder that all monies need to be paid by Friday 1st June (last day of this half term).
Water bottles - The weather has recently shown an improvement and so this is just a reminder that in the warmer weather it is advisable that your child brings a water bottle to school. Many thanks.

Year 2 Week 18 2012
This week has been another very busy week.
Thank you to everyone who came to the phonics session. It was great to see you all and we hope that you found the session informative.
In literacy, we have been writing character descriptions taking care to include details like appearance, actions and behaviour, to make them interesting. The children have also been trying to include direct speech and punctuation.
In maths, we have been learning about fractions and solving word problems that relate to them. We have also been learning to tell the time including quarter to and quarter past.
The children really enjoyed a visit to the pond by Lake House to look at animal habitats. We found some tadpoles, which we looked at very carefully.
Our homework this week is about animal habitats and relates to the work that the children are doing in science.

Office Staff Shortages
An experienced member of our excellent office staff has just been posted.
So, over the next few weeks, our office will be staffed by temporary volunteers, until a permanent administrator takes up her post.
During this period, you will understand if tasks take a little longer than usual. If you can defer a query, without it having much impact, we would be grateful. Thank you.

Year 1 Week 18 2012
The children had a great time on camp yesterday! They visited the church where Padre James told them all about the importance of water to Christians and also modelled a Baptism! They also enjoyed pond dipping and found lots of tadpoles and pond skaters. A friendly fisherman also showed the children a huge carp and a roach which he had just caught!
Homework - This week the activities are writing questions using question words e.g. who, when, where, how, etc for literacy and, for numeracy, the activity is to label the shapes.
‘Thank you,’ to all the parents who attended the phonics workshop on Tuesday. If you were unable to attend, we hope you have found the word pack that was sent home useful. If you have any questions please ask.
Please keep sending library books into school daily to ensure they can be changed whenever we get the opportunity to visit the Iibrary.
FS1 Week 18 2012
This week, we have been learning about “Round and round the garden”. The children have loved beginning to make our display, making handprints, painting trees and next week we are even gong to be painting our own bears. Keep your eye on the display to see how we are getting on.
Hot weather - At the moment, even though our weather is very unpredictable, it is a good idea to get into the habit of putting sun cream on your child before they come to school. This will keep them safe in the sun until you collect them at 12.30. The children who are in EDC will be bringing home a letter explaining the hot weather procedures for you to complete at home. Also remember that no open toed shoes/ sandals are allowed on the large apparatus and sun hat/ caps are also needed every day. Thank you.
Spare clothes - If you have had any school clothes sent home as your child needed changing, could you please return them as soon as possible as we have none left in our cupboard. School Photographs - The children were very good when they had their trip to the photographer and, as promised, everyone was kept clean and tidy, and no messy fun was had until they returned! We will let you know a return date for them as soon as we hear from the photographer.

Quality Mark
This award recognises our excellent teaching of the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Winning the award is a tribute to the fantastic team of teachers and teaching assistants at Bielefeld School.
We have received the following text from the Quality Mark assessors:
We have received the following text from the Quality Mark assessors:
I am delighted that your child’s school has recently been awarded a Basic Skills Primary Quality Mark Award for the second time.
This national accreditation is awarded to schools which meet the Quality Mark Standard and will last for three years, after which a renewal assessment is required.
The Basic Skills Quality Mark promotes, supports and celebrates progress and improvements made by a school in English and Mathematics. Without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, literacy and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives — as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens and so they form the ‘bedrock’ of a good education.
To achieve a Quality Mark schools have to undergo an assessment, carried out by an external accredited assessor, against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark framework. These cover key aspects of the school’s improvement agenda, including the identification and analysis of the school’s needs; strategic planning; target setting for improvement; intervention and support for pupils under-achieving or under-attaining; provision of quality in both teaching and in resources; staff development; and active engagement with families. Effective monitoring and evaluation are also required - particularly to achieve renewal when continuing development by the school and evidence of impact of actions must be demonstrated.
I hope you will share in the pride of the school and its pupils in achieving this award.
