Today's Kapiti Assembly

Year 3's Kapiti Assembly
Just in case you missed this morning's excellent assembly by Year 3, here a snapshot ...

SSAFA Camo. Day

Our models are demonstrating the very latest in camouflage skirts and matching tops, in aid of SSAFA's Camo. Day appeal.

Apparently, mum and dad ran up these very functional and attractive fashion items!

The detailing in the badge work, together with the large belt accessories, make these skirts and tops must-have additions to everyone's wardrobe this summer. Watch out for them on the High Street!

Scientists, Technologists, Designers

To inspire the next generation of British inventors and entrepreneurs, Bielefeld School emphasises the teaching of Science, Technology and Design. As you can see, this includes understanding the basics of electrical circuits.

Batteries, wires, motors ...

Watch out for Science Week. It's coming soon!

Year 2 Week 26 2012

This week, in Literacy, we have been looking at poetry and nonsense rhymes. We have also been having fun trying to say limericks and tongue twisters!

In Numeracy, we have been learning to do fractions of quantities and learning our times tables.
Next Tuesday, 03 Jul, is the Sports Day and Family Picnic lunch. The Key Stage 1 event starts at 10.l5am. The children will need their PE kits and suitable pumps or trainers to wear.

Please remember that all children will need a packed lunch on Tue 03 Jul, so that they can take part in the Picnic Lunch.

Every child in Year 2 should have brought a letter home yesterday about our trip to the DinoPark on Wed 11 July. Please return the permission slip, so that we can take your child with us. If you would like to help, please let us know.

Dinosaur Park Trips

As part of Bielefeld School’s Science Week, the children of FS2 and Year 2 will be investigating dinosaurs. To make their investigations even more enjoyable, we are planning 2 visits to Dinopark.

Dinopark is a dinosaur open air museum, near Hannover. There are naturally preserved dinosaurs tracks (discovered in 1987) as well as life size models, spread around wooded park land. There are also opportunities for the children to do some excavating!

Further information can be found at www.dinopark.de

We plan to take the FS2 children on Thu 12 Jul and Year 2 children on Wed 11 Jul. The buses will leave school shortly after 9am and return shortly before 3pm on each day. The cost for this trip will be €10.

Your child will also need the following on their day:

* Appropriate clothing: a hat and sun protection (and/or a rain Mac., if the weather is poor).
* A packed lunch and a drink in a ‘sippable’ plastic bottle.
* A backpack, to carry their coat all day, as well as their lunch and drink.
* Up to €10, in a named purse/wallet/envelope for an ice cream, a small gift or to pay for excavating dinosaur bones and/or painting a dinosaur model.

This trip will be a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn outside of the classroom, in a fun and enjoyable way. This is a large ‘hands on’ scientific park and there many other opportunities for active learning and exploration with friends.

Year 1 Week 26 2012

The children have enjoyed being in camouflage and mufti today!

We have been working hard this week. In Literacy, we have been looking at instructions for making pirate hats and sandcastles. We have looked at the features of instructions, such as 'bossy words' and numbering.

In Numeracy, we have been working with money. We have worked on recognising different coins and making different amounts. We have also been trying to exchange large coins for smaller coins of the same value.

Well done to everyone for their fantastic boats! It is clear that children (and parents) have spent a lot of time and effort on the creative homework project. The children have had chance to talk about their boats and to describe their posters. We have put the boats and posters out on display, so that the children have a chance to see each other's work and ask questions to find out more!

Please can you ensure that your child brings their PE kit to school on Monday and leaves it in school all week, as we can do PE at any time during the week? We are still having lots of children borrowing kit. We will send the PE kit home on Friday to be washed.

Dates for your diary: Sports Day - Tue 03rd Jul.

Homework: The children have a Literacy and Numeracy activity in their homework folders. The children have to write the instructions for playing snakes and ladders. They also have to say how much money is in each purse.

Reminder: Please send hats and water bottles to school with the children, as it is now getting hotter. If you have any concerns please contact us.

FS2 Week 26 2012

Early Years’ Sports Day: Our Sports Day, for our FS and KS1 children, is planned for Tue 03 Jul at 10.15 am. All parents and carers are welcome to come along. If the weather is not suitable on this Tuesday, the Sports Day will be rearranged to Thu 05 Jul.

Family Lunch: All parents and carers are welcome to join us on Sports Day for the Family Lunch, between 12 noon and 1.00 pm. Please let us know if you would like to join in with this event.

Science Week: The whole school is having a Science Week beginning on Mon 09 Jul. All FS2 children will need a small, clean, plastic bottle for one of our investigations. Please send all of your small, plastic bottles to school as soon as possible, so that every child can participate. Thank you.

Football & Pokemon Cards

We thank parents and carers for ensuring that Football, Pokemon and similar cards are only collected and exchanged by children off school premises. 'School premises', here, includes the school perimeter, playgrounds and buses.

Sadly, some exchanges of these cards, between some children, have disrupted the safe and harmonious passage of children on school transport recently.

We insist, therefore, that these cards remain off school premises. Again, thank you for your co-operation.

FS1 Week 26 2012

This week, the children have really enjoyed all of the pirate activities. They are collecting stamps for their pirate passport and are busy completing all the activities that they need to do to become a “real pirate”.

Dive in and see our pirate ship!

Are you leaving early for your holiday? If you know that your child will be finishing before the end of term, 20 Jul, please let us know as soon as possible. We can then make sure that we have completed all of the procedures before you go.

EDC: Please make sure, if you need EDC in September, that you let us know now as we have to make sure that we take the right amount of extra staff to cover all of the places required. Thank you.

Snack reminder: If you have not yet paid your snack bill, please do so as soon as possible. If it is not paid by the end of term, it will be added to your next bill.

Registering for the bus: If your child is going up to FS2 in September, and you want them to come into school and go home on the bus, then you MUST go and register them at the SSO’s Office. Last year, the bus escorts turned children away on the first day, as they are not allowed to take them on the bus, if they are not on their list. This is because unregistered children are not insured. So, please make sure that you register them in time.

Emergency! Emergency! Thank you for the bottles and pots that you sent to school. The children have enjoyed sinking their boats and making messages in bottles.

Wellies and old clothes: Most children seem to be having a growth spurt at the moment. If you find that your child has outgrown their clothes, coats, wellies etc. then please don’t throw them away. We would be very grateful of any donations, so that we can keep our spares box topped up.

Important Dates: Tue 03 Jul- Sports Day. Wed 18 Jul- Animal Fancy Dress Party. Fri 20 Jul - school closes for the summer holiday. Please note that there will be no EDC on 20 Jul, as the school closes at 12.30hrs.

Lost Property

'Lost property' is a perennial problem in primary schools. Our lost property 'box' is now full.

Please:
  • Note that we will donate all unclaimed items to the Thrift Shop at the end of this term.
  • Feel free to come and look for your missing property.
  • Encourage your child(ren) to look after your property, especially expensive coats etc.
  • Inform a member of staff as soon as possible, if expensive items (especially) become lost. This makes it much easier for us to try and recover the items quickly.
  • Check that your child's name and class, written on all key items, remain clear after repeated washing.
Thank you.

Camo. & Armed Forces' Days

We invite our children to dress like British soldiers, in camouflage clothing, in school tomorrow, Fri 29 Jun, to raise money for SAAFA.

If you do not have access to camouflage clothing, you may come dressed in 'mufti'. A donation of one Euro for SSAFA would be appreciated. Thank you.

The following day, don't forget, is Armed Forces' Day

Telephone Lines

Please note that today, Thu 28 Jun 12, the school's telephone lines are not working. You may have experienced difficulties contacting the school by telephone yesterday too.

Until the telephones are repaired, please email the school on sce.bielefeld@sceschools.com or call into the School Office. Thank you.

Re-Roofing Work

The main school building will be re-roofed this summer.

Work will start on the scaffolding on Wed 11 Jul, with the re-roofing work starting about one and a half weeks later, which will be during our school holiday.

If the weather is good during the school holiday, ahem, the new roof should be on and the scaffolding should be down by the time that we return to school in September. If the weather is bad, however, there will be a delay to the work. Read our school website for updates on the roofing work in early Sep.

Rest assured that we are doing, and will do, everything that we can to design-out the associated risks to children and adults. We will also change some procedures and traffic routes closer to the time.

We ask for your patience during this vital work. We rely on everyone who passes near the scaffolding to check visually for new risks and to notify a member of staff immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

FS1 Week 25 2012

This week, we started our three week topic on Pirates. We have had lots of fun: making a huge pirate ship in the Green Room, designing a hide-out to store our gold outside and finding out that some pirates, the kind that we will find in our Setting, are kind and friendly. Do have a look around our Setting and note the fantastic things that are going on but, beware, you may need to hold onto your bags or they may end up in our treasure chest!

Weather rules: The weather is very changeable at the moment. So, please make sure that your child brings a sun hat and a coat to school every day. The weather can change very quickly during a morning and some children are getting upset if they are not allowed outside, as they do not have the appropriate clothing for the weather.

Snack reminder: If you have not yet paid your snack bill, please do so as soon as possible. If your bill is not paid by the end of term, it will be added to your next bill. Thank you for your co-operation.

Registering for the bus: If your child is going up to FS2 in Sep 12, and you want them to come to school and go home on the military bus, you MUST register your child at the SSO’s office. Last year, the bus escorts turned away unregistered children on the first day of term. The escorts are not allowed to let unregistered children travel on the buses, as they are not insured. So, please make sure that you register your child in time.

Emergency, emergency: We need desperately empty plastic bottles with lids and plastic pots (e.g., large yoghurt pots and microwave meal pots) for our pirate activities next week. If you could collect the bottles and pots at home and send them in, we would really appreciate it. If you have any pirate stories that we could share in school, please send them in for us to read. Thank you.

Wellies and old clothes: Most of our children seem to be having a growth spurt at the moment. If you are finding that your child has outgrown their clothes, coats, wellington boots etc. then, please, don’t throw them away! We would be very grateful of any donations of FS1 children's clothing and/or wellies, so that we can keep our Spares Box topped up.

Important Dates: Wed 18 Jul is our Animal Fancy Dress party. The school closes for the summer holiday on Fri 20 Jul. Please note that there will be no EDC on that day as the school closes at 12.30pm.

FS2 Week 25 2012

Welcome back to everyone, after the half term holiday. It is lovely to see all of the children refreshed and ready to learn.

Shared reading: some KS2 children are visiting FS2 every day now, for 20 minutes, to share a book. Our FS2 children are enjoying reading with, and to, the older children thoroughly. Please continue to enjoy your child’s books with him or her at home.

Baking contributions: thank you to all of the parents and carers who have sent in their baking contributions. We would appreciate any outstanding money next week, if possible please, in order to buy food for a Gruffalo Party. Thank you.

Year 1 Week 25 2012

This week, the children have all taken part correctly and fairly in the Year 1 Phonics Screening. They all tried very hard; well-done boys and girls! Individual results from the screening will be included in each child’s end of year report.

In literacy, we have been reading ‘under the sea’ poetry. We have focussed on reading with expression and pace. We have also been finding rhyming pairs and continuing lists of rhyming words. We then had to sort the rhyming words by spelling patterns. Phew!

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting using different methods and using a range of words for the symbols. We have had to talk about how we worked out our answers.

Homework: creative projects that include a design, model and information poster are due Mon 25 Jun. We have already seen some fantastic work and look forward to the children sharing their ideas next week

Please remember that drinking bottles are to be filled with water only, as the children do use them while they are working and accidents can happen!

21 Jun 2012

Year 3 Trip to Eiscafé Venezia

During the afternoon of Mon 25 Jun 12, as part of our German course, we are planning to take all of our Year 3 children to the Eiscafé Venezia in Stieghorst.

The children will need to bring money to buy their choice of ice cream. The ice cream costs 70 cents for one scoop, €1.40 for two scoops and €2.10 for einen becher. Please ensure that your child has the correct change to be able to pay for their ice cream individually and that the money is in a purse or sealed envelope, brought in on the day of the trip.

We will leave school in the afternoon and be back by home time. If your child has any allergies (e.g., dairy products or nuts), please inform the class teacher in writing.

You might like to discuss with your child what flavours he or she would like to choose and practice how to ask for an ice cream in German.

Blue Ice Cream!

Year 5 chilled out with a well-earned ice cream, or 3, in Goslar today.

Read the Twitter feed on this page for more information about their exploits and more pictures like this one!

Sun Dialling

It's almost the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, and Year 3's children have been tracking the Earth's movement around the Sun, by drawing around their shadows at set time intervals.

Shadow Outlines

The children have also been learning about light, as well as transparent and opaque materials.

Year 2 Week 24 2012

NAAFI Store Evaluation

Special friends

This week, the children have been for a long walk around the camp. Their aims were to find out about the kind of services that are available, as well as to identify the places that they like and the places that they think need improving.

We are encouraging the children to talk about the changes that they would make to their environment and why. We thank the team at Lake House, who made us very welcome. We all enjoyed the walk and, fortunately, we just got back in time for lunch!

In Literacy, we have been doing ‘Talk for Writing” about the walk, to help us to write an interesting recount about the things that we saw. We were very impressed with the connectives and vocabulary that the children used in their writing.

Next Friday is the Year Two Assembly. The children will be sharing work that they are proud of, and they will also be performing a very special story. It will be held in the School Hall at 10 o’clock. We hope that all Year 2 parents and carers will all be able to join us.

We would like children who attend clubs and wear a uniform - like the Beavers, Brownies or Bielefeld Bulldogs - to bring a photograph into school of themselves wearing their uniform. This will be used as part of an RE topic.

We said, 'Farewell,' to a special teaching assistant this week and, 'Welcome,' to her replacement.

Year 1 Week 24 2012

This week in Numeracy, we have been looking at recording information in tally charts. We then used this information to create our own block graphs.

In Literacy, we have been recapping lots of the sounds that we have been learning in phonics. Please be reminded that, next week, we will be carrying out the Year One Phonics Screening.

Please continue to work on the sounds that we send home after the phonics workshop. We are also sending home a phoneme mat. This shows the 44 different sounds that can be found in words. Practise reading real and non-words with these sounds in, with your child.

Homework: We have had some brilliant boats in school already. We hope that your projects are going well. They are due in on the 25 Jun.

A quick reminder that toys should not be brought into school, as some are getting lost or broken and causing lots of upset.

FS1 Week 24 2012

This week, we have concluded our topic on Mini-beasts. The children have been very creative, making large and small bugs for our display. They also have been learning interesting facts about where insects live, what they like to eat and how they move. If you get a chance, pop into the Blue Room (first room on the left as you enter the Setting) and have a look at their fantastic work.

Hot weather rules:  As it is now very hot, all children need to bring a sun hat; this should be with them every day. Children should also have sun cream applied before they come to school. We will be unable to let them play outside if they do not come to school ready for the hot weather, as it is unsafe for them to play out in the sun unprotected. EDC children need to bring in their sun cream (with their name on) and hand it to a member of staff. Parents also need to complete the sun cream slip. If you need another copy, please ask.

Snack reminder: If you have not yet paid your snack bill, please do so as soon as possible. If it is not paid by the end of term, it will be added to your next bill. Thank you.

Photographs: If you have returned your photograph money, we will inform you when the photographs come into school. They will hopefully be here before the end of term.

Registering for the bus: If your child is going up to FS2 in September, and you want them to come into school and go home on the bus, you MUST go and register them at the SSO’s Office. Last year, the bus escorts turned some children away, on the first day of the Autumn term, as they are not allowed to take them on the bus without prior registration. If children are not on the bus escorts' lists, they are not insured; so, please make sure that you register your child in good time.

Important dates: Wed 18 Jul - Animal Fancy Dress Party. School closes for the summer holiday on Fri 20 Jul. Please note that there will be no EDC on the last day. The school closes at 12.30.

Dummersee Residential

Just a quick reminder: we are still waiting for some children’s trip money, T-shirt money and Medical Indemnity/Consent forms for the Dummersee Residential.

Please could we have all outstanding monies and forms in as soon as possible (and no later than lunchtime on Fri 22 Jun). Thank you.

Sports Day & Family Picnic Lunch

Our Sports Day and Family Picnic Lunch will take place on Tue 03 Jul 12.

Weather permitting, the events will take place on the grass sports field next to the Key Stage 2 Playground. Our aim is for the day to be a real family occasion, with lots of fun events for the children. The Family Picnic Lunch will take place on the grass field between 12:00 and 13:00 hrs.

Please provide your own food (and drink) for the Picnic Lunch. We request that all children come to school with a packed lunch on this day, so that we can all eat on the field together.

We look forward to what should be a really enjoyable day. We hope that as many parents and family members as possible support this event.

Do Try This At Home

Place 3 Skittles, apart from one another, in a saucer of cold water, preferably a white saucer.

Watch what happens over the next half an hour and work out what is happening. Talk to your mum, dad, carer, big brother or big sister, if you get stuck.

Does the same behaviour occur with Smarties? Tell your teacher what you think is happening.

Computer Graphics & Coding Clubs

Ink Sketch Effects in Paint.net

Our computer graphics and code clubs started at lunchtime today. The clubs will run for 6 weeks and excite our children about careers in the media and programming industries. The children will learn to use Paint.net and Notepad++, both of which are free to download at home.

We thank two of our parents, and two of our teachers, for contributing their skill, knowledge and time. Good use was made of the 19 new Dell multimedia computers that Service Children's Education supplied to the school over the half term break.
