Year 1 Week 28 2012

It has been ‘Science Week’, this week, and the children have been working towards a ‘Star Award’. They have completed 8 different science activities and experiments and have learnt a lot! The activities they have completed are: muddy mess, confusing cans, peggy problems, tea bad trouble and many more!

On Monday, it is our trip to the zoo. Please send us your child with their school jumper and a t-shirt. They will also need a drink in a ‘sippable’ bottle, sun cream and hats. The children will be walking around for a lot of the day, so please ensure that they are wearing suitable shoes and that they have a suitable bag to carry their belongings. Parent helpers need to be in school for 9am, please.

On Wednesday of next week, the children can bring in a toy or a game from home. Please ensure that the toys and games are not too expensive or that they have too much sentimental value.

Homework: The children are bringing home their ‘water projects’ to finish. If they have finished the project already, there is an acrostic poem for them to create.

Diary Dates: 20 Jul - school finishes at 13.15 hrs. 05 Sep - school begins for the Autumn term.

Year 4 Science Week

Here is evidence that Year 4 also played a full part in Science Week.

You can see our pupils experimenting with the ways that soluble objects dissolve and how the relative densities of the resulting solutions can cause them to separate.

Fascinating stuff, eh?

FS2 Week 28 2012

Science Week: We would like to thank very much all of our parents and carers who came with us to the Dinosaur Park. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day. We’re sure you have also heard about the exciting investigations that our children have participated in, during Science Week.

Watch out!

Animal Party Day: On Wed 18 Jul, FS1 and FS2 will have a joint Animal Party. All of the children are invited to dress up as an animal or wear an animal mask.

Named Bag: Please send your child to school with a named carrier bag next week. This will be used on Thursday for your child to take home all of their belongings.

End of Term: School finishes next week at 13.15hrs, on Fri 20 Jul.

Thank You: We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout the year. Have a safe, enjoyable and relaxing summer holiday.

Year 2 Week 28 2012

This week has been Science Week and we have had great fun carrying out a range of investigations relating to materials. These included: finding the safest materials to wear at night, the best materials to use to make a hanky and the most efficient way to make different types and shapes of bubbles. We are intending to carry this theme on into next week.

Our trip to Dino Land was a great success. Once again, the children behaved extremely well and we were very proud of them all! We found out lots of interesting facts and we were able to see just how big some of the dinosaurs were in real life. The giant spiders were the scariest!

We would like to say, 'Thank you,' to everyone who has returned the Comment Sheet that was attached to each child’s school report.

Just a quick reminder that school will finish next Fri 20 Jul at 1:15 pm. The children will return to school on 05 Sep.

FS1 Week 28 2012

The children have been learning about animals this week: what they look like, what noises they make and where they live. They have enjoyed making clay animals and animal prints around the Setting. The children are looking forward to the Animal Fancy Dress party next week.

EDC: Please make sure that, if you need EDC in September, you let us know as soon as possible. This is because we have to hire the right amount of extra staff on to cover all of the places required. Thank you.

End of school: We finish school next Fri (20 Jul) at 12.30hrs. The main school will finish at 13.15hrs. There will be NO EDC next Friday (see below).

Animal Fancy Dress Party: Just a quick reminder that the children will be having a fancy dress animal party on Wednesday 18 Jul. We are looking forward to seeing all their lovely costumes. There will be face painting on the day. So, please let us know if you do not wish your child to have his or her face painted. Otherwise we will assume that they can have it done.

Roofing work: The main school building is being re-roofed. Please make sure that you supervise your child/children closely at all times when you are out on the playground, before and after the Session. Thank you for helping us to keep your child/children safe.

New intake meeting: There is a new intake meeting for children who are starting FS1, on Tue 17 Jul in the Gym, between 14.00 and 15.00 hrs. If you have a child who is due to start in September, or you know any new families that arriving soon, please let them know. Letters have already been sent out but reminders at this busy time of year are always helpful.

Important Dates: Wed 18 Jul - Animal Fancy Dress Party. Fri 20 Jul - schooL closes for the summer holiday. Please note that there will be no EDC next Friday as the school effectively closes at 12.30hrs.

Year 1 Trip Osnabrück Zoo

As part of their 'Water, Water Everywhere' topic, our Y1 children are learning about the animals that live in and around water.

To bring this topic alive, and to make it even more enjoyable, we are planning an end of year trip to Osnabrück Zoo. The children will have the chance to observe lots of different animals, including sea lions and penguins, and to visit the Aquarium.

We will go to the zoo on Mon 16 Jul. The buses will leave school shortly after 9 am and return shortly before 3 pm. Your child will need the following, on the day:
  • Appropriate clothing, a hat and sun protection (and/or a rain Mac., if the weather is poor).
  • A packed lunch and a drink, in a ‘sippable’ plastic bottle.
  • A backpack to carry a lunch, drink and coat around all day.
  • Up to €5 in a named purse/wallet/envelope, for an ice cream or small gift.
This trip will be a wonderful opportunity for the children to enjoy learning outside of their classrooms, in a fun and enjoyable way, with many other opportunities for active learning and exploration with their friends.

Drinks And Dehydration

There are still some school trips planned for next week.

If a trip for your child includes a packed lunch, please ensure that you include a drink.

The drink should be still. Ideally, still water. This avoids the possibility of dehydration.

Especially if you are moving this summer, please collect and send to school any clean and serviceable sheets or blankets.

Our children will use these items to make dens outdoors in what remains of the warm, dry weather.

School Book Return

We have spent thousands of pounds recently on some fantastic new books and furniture for our School Library, which the children know how to use, according to the Library Rules.

Our librarian has worked tirelessly, to catalogue all of the books, ready for your children to take home and read.

To ensure that everything is ready for September, we now ask you to return any school books that you have 'on loan' by Mon 16 Jul, please; especially if you are leaving Germany this summer.

Some of our new furniture and books

By returning books to school now, we can make sure that our children have access to quality books in September that will inspire a love of reading for life!

If you have lost or damaged any books, please let us know. Thank you.

Year 6 Building Bridges

Here is yet more evidence of the excellent engineering projects at Bielefeld School, from girls and boys alike.

This time, it is our Year 6 children using their knowledge of cantilevers, and principles of physics to design and build various bridges.

These fine models are on display in our walkway, adjacent to the School Office.

Drawing In The Park
Wow another busy week has just flown by!

We would like to say, ‘Thank you,’ to everyone who came to the Sports Day and Family Picnic. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

We had a very successful walk around the Steighorst area and we found out lots of information about the housing, shops and transport links that are available. The children spent some time drawing in the park before enjoying an ice cream. We adults were very proud of all the children, who were all extremely well behaved and polite. Well done everyone!

Please remember that our trip to the Dino Park is on Wed 11 Jul. The children do not need to wear school uniform on the day but please make sure that they have appropriate footwear and outdoor clothing. They may bring a maximum of 10 euros each only.

Year 1 Week 27 2012

We send a big, 'Thank you,' to everyone who came to our assembly. The children have worked really hard throughout the year and it was their chance to show you some of their achievements.

We send another, 'Thank you,' to everyone who made it to Sports' Day. It was a huge success and the children really enjoyed it. It was lovely to see so many families on the field at lunch time.

Please remember that, for safety reasons, the children are unable to go on certain equipment at play times and lunch times if they are wearing open-toe shoes.

Homework: As we are coming to the end of our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ topic (and the end of the year too), the children have a project to complete to show what they have learnt. This week, the children need to complete 4 or more pages. The pages that they complete can be their choice.

As the weather is getting warmer, please remember to send your child to school with sun hats, water bottles and sun cream.

FS1 Week 27 2012

This week, the children have been really busy finishing off their pirate adventures. They have also been very active on the field, trying lots of different activities on Sports Day. The children really enjoyed themselves and we send a huge, 'THANK YOU,' to those parents who were able to attend and help cheer the children on.

EDC: Please make sure, if you need EDC in September, that you let us know: as we have to make sure that we take the right amount of extra staff on, to cover all the places required. Thank you.

Leaving early for the holiday? If you know that you are going to be finishing school before the end of term, Fri 20 Jul, please let us know as soon as possible. Then, we can make sure that we have all the things ready for your child(ren) before you go.

Have you been posted? At this busy time of year, people find out that they will be leaving Germany soon. If you have been posted, please let us know as soon as possible. Then, we can make sure that you fill in the correct paper work and get your leaving documents ready for you in time.

Animal Fancy Dress Party: Just a quick reminder that the children will be having an Animal Fancy Dress party on Wed 18 Jul. We are looking forward to seeing all of the lovely costumes. There will be face painting on the day. So, please let us know if you do not wish your child to have his or her face painted. Otherwise, we will assume that they can have the painting done. Thank you.

Transition times for children going up to FS2: The children have already had two visits this week to FS2, where they have explored the Setting and had a look at what toys etc. are available. Next week, the children will be having a look at the playground. They will also be having a small amount of time on the playground with the older children, so they can see what it is like. On Fri 13 Jul, between 12 noon and 12.30 pm, you are invited to have a look around yourself and to talk to the FS2 staff. They are looking forward to meeting with you!

Important dates: Wed 18 Jul- Animal Fancy Dress Party; school closes for the summer holiday on Fri 20 Jul- please note that there will be no EDC that day as the school will close at 12.30pm.

Ready, Steady, GO!

Site Manager Vacancy

We have a vacancy for a Site Manager (aka caretaker).

The Site Manager is responsible to the Head Teacher for the care and upkeep of the school's grounds, buildings and furnishings. The Site Manager acts as the main health and safety representative for the school, liaising closely with the school's Senior Leadership Team.

The vacancy is at the CS4 grade and for 35 hours a week, during term time. However, the successful candidate will be a key holder and s/he may be required to permit access to the school buildings at other times.

Category 3 and Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) security clearances will be sought and, all being well, the lucky candidate will start work in Sep 12.

If you would like to join our happy team, contact the GLSU today!

Fire Extinguishing in Y5

Scientists in Year 5 have discovered how to extinguish a fire by swamping it with Carbon Dioxide, thus depriving the fire of Oxygen.

Ask your child about Science Week, which is next week at school! Meanwhile, here are some experiments to try in your kitchen this weekend.

FOBS Olympic Games Cancelled

Please note that the Olympic Games, planned by the Friends of Bielefeld School on Fri 13 Jul, has been cancelled. This is because the roofers will begin work on their scaffolding on Mon 09 Jul and the scaffolding will impinge on the main playground, where some of the games were to be held.

School dinners will now be available, as normal, on Friday the 13th. The menu will be: fish goujons, potato wedges, peas and salad; followed by chocolate sponge and ice cream. Hmm. Delicious!

Please also note that the scaffolding will cause further parking restrictions, and increased heavy traffic, around the school. If you must drive to school, please find a car park away from the buildings and walk in.

Thank you for your understanding.

Extra German Tuition

We have a German student, on work experience, who is willing to teach your children some German outside of school hours. The student lives in Heepen, near the married quarters.

If you would like to make contact, please send an email to: miriritter@ gmx.de
