Head Teacher's Christmas Message

Mr. Westmoreland
The Autumn Term has been incredibly busy and challenging.

Last month, Her Majesty's Inspectors rewarded everyone's endeavour and professionalism by awarding Bielefeld School the coveted Good rating. I look forward to building on that significant success in 2013.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our children and my staff for their commitment to achieving high standards at all times.

I wish everyone associated with our fantastic school - including our children, our parents, our carers, our Governors, our Advisors, our friends in the Garrison and my colleagues - a very peaceful and happy Christmas.

I look forward to welcoming our children safely back to school in the New Year, at 08.45 hrs on Tuesday 08 January 2013.

Year 2 Week 51 2012

A Bold Knight
This week, our Year 2 children enjoyed dressing up in Medieval and party clothes, to take part in an historical banquet.

The children ate typical food from Medieval times, such as bread, cheese and apples, and they took part in a variety of Medieval entertainment.

The children have also had fun making lots of Christmas decorations!

Homework for the Christmas holidays comprises of a fun activity book, which has lots of different tasks for the children to complete. However, if they would also like to write a Christmas diary, they may use their homework books to do this.

Just a reminder that the new school term begins on Tuesday 08 January 2013. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Year 5 Week 51 2012

Space Models
An amazing assortment of creative homework projects has been brought into school over the past few weeks and the children all received certificates and the chance to share their work with the class on Tuesday.

There were some fantastic models brought in and it was interesting to listen to the different materials the children used to build their model from. The models are on display around school for visitors and other children to look at.

We have had a very Christmassy week making Christmas biscuits and decorations. We have also participated in some math’art’matics with Mr. Fidler and are now experts at drawing Christmas objects using numbers!

This term has been very long and all the children have worked continuously hard and they now deserve a well earned break. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Year 6 Week 50 2012

King's School Christmas Fair
What a wonderful week! Year 6 did themselves proud; performing ‘Silent Night’ on their guitars for the Christmas concert yesterday.

We had a lovely time at the King’s Christmas fair this morning. The children purchased various treats and games from the Year 11 enterprise stalls.

This afternoon, the children enjoyed party games and dancing at DJ Askew’s disco in the school hall.

There will be no homework this week. When we return in the New Year, we will continue our quest to achieve to the best of our ability, with enthusiasm and gusto.

Feel free to work on your times table facts, as these are imperative to becoming and accomplished mathematicians

Creative homework projects certificates, stickers and feedback sheets are almost complete and will be handed out next week.

Reacquaintance At King's School

Year 5 Week 50 2012

More Snow Science
A very festive week for Year 5! They performed brilliantly at the Christmas concert and had lots of compliments about their singing.

This afternoon, the children enjoyed party games, party food and lots of music from our resident DJ Askew. There are lots of super dancers in Year 5 for sure!

Swimming will start up again the week we come back to school and the children will get an extra week due to missing this Thursdays for the Christmas concert.

Monday is the last day to bring in school homework projects, awards and certificates will be handed out once these have been handed in.

Year 4 Week 50 2012

Octahedral Christmas Decorations
The Autumn Term is drawing to an end. The second Advent candle has been lit! Soon the third will be illuminated! We will continue to study the theme of ‘waiting’ and ‘preparation.’

We remind you that our Wedding celebration will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday the 19th of December. It would be wonderful to see the children in all of their finery on that day. They could bring a change of ‘wedding’ clothes with them in a marked bag.

If you could possibly provide 'savoury bites’ for five children for our ‘Wedding Buffet’, this would be very much appreciated. Miss Mead is going to make cakes with all the children.

Mr.Fidler made ‘octahedron decorations’ this week in Art.

Year 4 provided a lovely atmosphere to our School Christmas Presentation. ‘Lift up lightly the stable bar’ was sung with gentle emotion!

Miss Mead is continuing to work with both classes on the iPads, using the app iMovie.

We wish you and your family a Happy Christmas and a very joyous 2013.

Year 3 Week 50 2012

Year 3 Singing Carols Yesterday
We hope that all of those parents and carers who attended the School Carol Concert enjoyed the efforts of all the children! The children have enjoyed learning the songs and they deserved their Christmas parties today!

This week, we have carried out a number of other Christmas activities, from making a Christmas decoration with our talented art expert Mr. Fidler, to learning about German Christmas traditions with Frau Lowe.

The children have enjoyed the snowy playtimes and are really getting in the mood for Christmas.

As this will be our last news of 2012, may we take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Medieval Banquet - Tuesday 18 December

Parents, please be aware that Year Two's Medieval Banquet will be held on Tuesday 18 December in the afternoon.

Children may wear any medieval costumes they like; such as knights, jesters, maidens etc., or they may wear party clothes.

We will be playing lots of games and dancing. It shouid be good fun!

Year 2 Week 50 2012

Dancing Around The Christmas Tree
This week, the children have been practising really hard for the Christmas Performance, which was on Thursday.

Things went wonderfully and the children all sang beautifully. Thank you to those of you who came along to support the children.

In Literacy this week, the children have been looking at instructions and how to wrap presents. They wrapped up a present all by themselves, before following some instructions to improve their wrapping. They all did extremely well and enjoyed getting into the Christmas spirit!

Today was the Christmas Party and the children all dressed up in their party clothes to play lots of fun games. There was a disco too, courtesy of our very own DJ Martin! We hope everyone had a marvellous time!

Year 1 Week 50 2012

Year 1's 5 Minute Call Yesterday
Thank you to everyone who come to the Christmas Concert. The children sang beautifully and we hope that you enjoyed their performance.

For Christmas homework, we are asking the children to complete a diary. They can use it to record events which happen during the holidays.

We hope that they will do some writing but the children could also include photographs, drawings or brochures. We will use this diary during the first week back at school.

We would like to thank you all for your continued support. We hope that you all have a Happy Christmas.

FS2 Week 50 2012

FS Boogie!
Thank you to all parents/carers who were able to enjoy our Christmas Performance. We were extremely proud of the children. Photographs and music from the Christmas Performance will be on our website very soon!

Please visit www.bielefeldschool.com, daily. during term time, for details of current and future events, diary dates and much more.

Our Christmas Parties were held today, Friday 14 December. The children wore party clothes to school all day. Thank you for ensuring that they still had suitable warm, waterproof clothing to wear outside.

Thank you to the Friends of Bielefeld School (FoBS), too, for supplying necessary nibbles etc. for all of the class parties.

The school closes for the Christmas Holiday on Thursday 20 December at 13.15 hrs. We look forward to seeing you all on 08 January 2013.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.

FS1 Week 50 2012

FS Party!
The children have had a really busy week. We hope that you enjoyed the Christmas Performance yesterday. We also hope that you agree that the children made everyone proud with their beautiful singing and how smartly they sat for the whole performance. Well done children!

The Christmas Party was a real success, lots of fun was had by all and we want to say a huge thank you to FOBS for supplying the party food and prizes.

Our snack next week will be toast and jam, continental breakfast, cereals and a Christmas surprise snack.

If you are planning to finish school before Thursday 20 December, please let your child’s key worker know. We can then make sure that your children take home with them all of the things that they have made. Thank you.

The school breaks up for the Christmas holiday on Thursday 20th, at 12.30pm. This means that there will be no afternoon EDC on that day. The main school closes at 13.15 hrs. We come back to schooL on Tuesday 08 January, as Monday is a staff training day.

School Absence Procedures

Illness Procedure

We remind parents and carers that they must report all absences, including those due to dental and medical appointments, to the School Office by 09.30 hrs on the first day that their child is absent.

Simply telephone 0521 9254 3840.

After 09.30 hrs, our office staff will try to contact the parents and carers of absent children before referring unexplained absences to Units' Welfare Officers.

Therefore, we encourage parents and carers to email all new mobile and land line numbers to sce.bielefeld [at] sceschools.com immediately. Simply replace [at] with the @ symbol in the email address.

To save any embarrassment, we also encourage parents and carers to contact the school actively, rather than wait for the school to contact them.

Vomiting And/Or Diahorrea

Children who are ill through vomiting and/or diahorrea should return to school 48 hours after their last bought of vomiting and/or diahorrea. Whilst infectious, children should avoid public places, particularly hospitals.

Please, always encourage your child(ren) to wash their hands often and thoroughly - with warm, soapy water - as part of their normal daily routine, to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Hand washing is particularly important immediately after using the toilet, before eating food and before preparing food.

Also, please encourage your child(ren) to keep their nails short and to use a clean handkerchief, to catch all sneezes or coughs.

Holidays In Term Time

Should you wish to take your child(ren) out of school for a holiday, of any length, then parents and carers must seek the prior approval of the Head Teacher.

Simply fill in the Request For Authorised Absence form completely and hand it in to the School Office at least 2 working days before the absence.

Class Christmas Parties!

An Angel Caring For Baby Jesus
During all of the hullabaloo, associated with our impressive Christmas Carol Concert today, some parents and carers may have forgotten that we have class-based Christmas Parties planned for tomorrow, Friday 14 December.

Children may dress in their party clothes for school. In essence, tomorrow will be a mufti day, without the need for a contribution to charity.

Party clothes are normally indoor wear.

We still have snow lying on the ground, so please ensure that your child(ren) has/have warm and waterproofed clothing and shoes for play times outside.

Thank you for supporting today's Concert. There were so many parents and carers there! We hope to have a PhotoStory available by tomorrow, so that your loved ones overseas can share in the event too.

Today, listen out for perennial festive favourites such as Rat-a-tat-tat, Away In A Manger and Silent Night as well as more modern Christmas songs like We Have Travelled and Hosanna Rock!

Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths

Brain Storm About Snow Temperature Differences
Today, in Science, Year 4 was asked whether snow is always the same temperature, wherever it is.

Assuming that the temperature differs, Year 4 was then asked to identify the likely causes of the temperature differences.

Some interesting theories about physics arose, as you can see from this map, which stemmed from a lively brain storming session. The map was created with Smartnotes technology, on an interactive whiteboard.

Using A Thermometer To Check The Temperature Of  Snow
Next, the girls and boys had to engineer some experiments that would test fairly their various theories.

Last, like all good physicists, it was out into the field, despite the weather, to note down numerous mathematical measurements that would prove, or disprove, the brainstormed ideas.

This is another fine example of how the children at Bielefeld School are excited about careers in important disciplines to our economy, such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM careers).

NB The Royal Institution's Christmas Lectures are about Chemistry this year. The Lectures will be on BBC Four at 8pm on 26, 27 and 28 December. Set your TV recorders today.

Snowy Playtimes

We send all children with warm coats, hats and gloves - and waterproofed footwear - out to play in the snow.

So, please send your child(ren) to school with appropriate winter clothing. A change of footwear would be highly desirable too.

Rehearsing For Sunday's Carol Concert
We look forward to seeing many of our parents and carers at 5pm today, Sunday 09 December, at the Anglo German Carol Concert, in the St. Nikolai Church, in the Altstadt; whatever the weather!

Our rehearsals of Christmas Lights and King Of All The World have been going well and the children are  very keen to show off their singing skills in front of a large audience.

You can eavesdrop on Friday's dress rehearsal here:

In Maths last week, the children worked hard on their multiplication and division skills. Please keep encouraging them to learn their times tables facts.

In English, we have been preparing the children for their next Big Write, when they will be writing a set of instructions.

It was good to see so many parents and carers at the Parent’s Evening last week.

FoBS' Christmas Fayre - Resounding Success!

Stalls In The School Gym
We would like to thank very much Mrs. Durban, and all of the other Friends of Bielefeld School, for making today's Christmas Fayre a resounding success!

We thank, too, our parents and carers for giving their children some extra pocket money to spend at the Fayre.
One Of The Throwing Stalls At The Fayre

Lastly, we thank all of the adults and children who donated items to sell and the adults who braved a very chilly winter wind to buy some goods from the stalls.

The cakes and confectioneries sold particularly well, as did the Enterprise Club's hand-made Christmas cards. Their was a brisk trade at the various raffle stalls too.

Year 5 Week 49 2012

Year 5 Running A Stall At The Fayre
Thank you to those parents and carers who came to the Meetings this week. It was lovely to meet you all and to share the fabulous work that your children have produced this term.

We have had a busy week preparing for our Christmas Production. Our song is ‘We have travelled’ and the children have shown great enthusiasm during our practices. Some of the children also have solos – please ensure that they learn all their words by Monday.

The Christmas Fayre was a great success. Many of our children ran stalls and sold goods effectively; yes, our very own Young Apprentices!

FS1 Week 49 2012

A Number String
The children have been finding out about St.Nikolaus this week and, hopefully, they all polished their shoes and received some goodies in return.

Some of the children have helped to decorate our Christmas tree this week and we have started practising the carol “We Will Rock You”.

Next week, the role play area will change into The Stable and we will be busy making lots of Christmas decorations and cards. Please make sure that your child’s Key Worker knows if you will be leaving before 20th December.

Christmas Performance: FS1 will take part in the whole-school Christmas performance in the School Hall on Thursday 13 December, starting at 10.10 am. The children will come in towards the end of the concert for their “We Will Rock You” song and stay for the finale of “Hosanna Rock”. More information next week.

Snack: Next week’s snack will be hot dogs, porridge, spaghetti on toast, cheese and crackers and Christmas decorated biscuits.

Christmas holiday: the school breaks up on Thursday 20 December at 12.30 pm. This means that there will be no afternoon Extended Day Care on that day. The main school closes at 13.15 hrs. We are back to school on Tuesday 08 January, as Monday 07 January is a staff training day.

Year 1 Week 49 2012

A Chance Meeting With Santa
Another very busy week has flown by.

Thank you for the Advent homework that the children have brought in. Once again, they were very creative and the children enjoyed sharing their work with their friends. The taste tests were very enjoyable.

Thank you to everyone who came to Parents' Evening. It was lovely to meet you all. If you were unable to attend, please let us know and we will arrange another appointment.

Next Monday, the children will watch the theatre production in the School Hall. On Thursday, we are having the whole-school Carol Concert in the Hall at 10.00 am. We hope that you will all be able to join us.

The weather is getting noticeably colder. Please remember to send your child to school with named hats and gloves, which they can wear at playtime. Tip: try stitching each glove to either end of a piece of elastic which can be threaded through the arms of your child’s coat. Then, when they take their gloves off, they stay firmly attached to the coat.

The homework this week is about following instructions. Have a lovely week end.

FS2 Week 49 2012

Our Version of a Kegelbahn
Parent/Teacher Meetings: Thank you for coming to our meetings this week. It was lovely to see you all and to have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress.

We would appreciate it, if you could take the time to complete and return the “Parent Voice” sheet that we have sent home today. We will keep the information in your child’s Learning Journey.

Christmas Performance: We hope that you will be able to enjoy our Christmas Performance in School next Thursday at 10.00 am. Please help your child to practise the words to “Away in a Manger” at home.

Warm Outdoor Clothing: Please ensure that your child brings named warm gloves, a named hat and a named scarf to school every day during the winter months. Thank you.

Year 4 Week 49 2012

Mock Up of the Thames And London
Another busy week in Year 4.

It was so good to see so many parents during the Parent/Teacher Consultations.

The first Advent candle has been lit! We will continue to study the theme of Waiting and Preparation.

Our Wedding celebration will take place on Wednesday 19 December. A little bit of advance warning: it would be wonderful to see the children in all their finery. They could bring a change of ‘wedding’ clothes with them on that day, in a marked bag. We will also be asking you to provide a small snack for the ‘Wedding Buffet.’ We will inform you of this early next week.

In Mathematics, we have been studying Data Handling, looking at how data is represented in a mathematical form. We have been working on Tally Charts, Pictograms and Bar Charts. Miss Mead’s set has been looking at Division.

In Literacy, Mr.Kerray has continued to work on Persuasive Openers, in preparation for ‘The Big Write.’ Miss Mead’s class has been looking at Information Text around their London theme.

Miss Mead is continuing to work with both classes on the iPads.

Year 2 Week 49 2012

Weaving Bookmarks
This week, the children have been finishing off their stunning woven bookmarks that they have been making with Mr. Fidler in Art. They have been looking at this technique, as Bielefeld is famous for weaving.

In Literacy, the children have been planning and writing their own stories based on the character of the Dragon from Julia Donaldson’s ‘Room on the Broom’. They have been trying hard to include commas, exciting vocabulary and speech marks into their stories. We are looking forward to reading them all!

In Numeracy this week, the children have been learning about positional language, as well as reflective symmetry in shapes.

We thank you once again for attending the Parents’ Evening meetings and would like to say that is was a pleasure meeting all of you.

The FoBS' Christmas Fayre - Today!

Please send your child to school today with some money to invest in a book or toy or DVD, perhaps, at the FoBS' Christmas Fayre.

We hope to see many parents and carers at the Fayre too, which will take place between 09.30 and 12 noon in the school's Gym. Fresh coffee will be available, as will some very tempting cakes and worthy raffle prizes.

Bring a friend and any visitors that you may have. Browse the bric-a-brac; buy the hand-made jewellery and Christmas cards; challenge our children to a festive game of skittles.

Yes, there'll be all the fun of the Fayre at Bielefeld School this morning. Hurry, hurry, hurry!

Bielefeld Bulldogs On Tour

Playing Tag Rugby
Recently, some of our girls and boys went on a rugby tour of England, where they played against the Chippenham Youth Rugby Club.

The children also toured Twickenham and watched the England Ladies' Team play against The Black Ferns at Aldershot. Apparently, the Hakka was phenomenal!
The Twickenham Tour

We thank Bielefeld Bulldog's rugby coaches very much for arranging this exciting and worthwhile tour.

If your child(ren) would like to learn how to play rugby (league and union), get fitter and benefit from the social sides of rugby, all they have to do is come to the Astro Turf Pitch near the NAAFI Store on almost any Sunday morning at 11am.

Cuddly Toys ...

More Toys ...

And Lots Of Books
Come and grab yourself a bargain, or three, at the 8th FoBS' Christmas Fayre this Friday, between 09.30am and 12 noon.

There will be a Christmas card competition, a raffle, a cake stall and a cafe for parents and carers. Bring a friend!

If you have some time to spare on Friday, please contact Mrs. Durban in Foundation Stage 1 at school soon. We still need some more volunteers to help on our various stalls.

In these photographs, you can see members of Year 6 practising their merchandising skills. They've made a pretty good job of laying out, and pricing up, your wares for sale. Come and see for yourself on Friday!

Year 3/4 Choir Rehearse

The Year 3/4 Choir
Today, our Year 3/4 Choir, which will perform at the Anglo German Carol Concert this Sunday, rehearsed their carols in front of the whole school during Assembly.

The children sang magnificently and the experience of performing in front of a large 'congregation' was thoroughly worthwhile.

Well done, to all concerned. We look forward to seeing as many of our parents, carers and children at the Saint Nikolai church in the Altstadt, at 5pm on this coming Sunday.

Join with our German and British friends at the church to celebrate Advent in song and stay awhile afterwards to eat and drink at the adjacent Christmas Market.

Friends of Bielefeld School Christmas Raffle

As usual, FoBS has a Christmas Raffle this year, with a large selection of fabulous prizes to be won.

The Raffle will take place on Friday 14 December. Tickets are priced at 50c each, or 5 for €2.

Through the Friends of Bielefeld School’s fund-raising efforts, the School has been able to purchase many items in the past, including our disco and microphone equipment.

Remember The Old Star Jumps?

Almost A Star Jump!
You'll be pleased to know that Gymnastics is still alive and well at Bielefeld School.

Climbing tables, crash mats and balance beams are as important as ever, to modern sports education.

And gymnastic techniques, such as star jumps, are still important too ...

... to the potential Olympic gymnasts of 2016 and 2020.

Yes, A Star Jump!
