Year 4 Week 04 2015

3D Map Making
In Literacy this week, we have started our new unit of work on report writing.  Using the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach, the children have been learning and orally retelling the text of a newspaper report, inspired by the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.

We have produced a class text map and the children have had a lot of fun thinking of actions to go with the words to help them remember the words of the report.  To further support the children in remembering the words, they have also drawn their own text map, which they will be bringing home to share and practise this weekend (see homework below).

In Maths this week, Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have been using the expanded and compact method to subtract 2 and 3-digit numbers from 3-digit numbers.  The children applied these methods when subtracting amounts of money.  Mrs Scannell’s group have focused on place value in 3-digit numbers, using arrow cards and place value grids to reinforce the value of each digit.

Heroic Talk For Writing
During our Topic sessions this week, we have continued to find out more about the explorers who discovered North America and have also begun to look at the landscape of North America.

In Art, in support of our topic work, the children have drawn plans of a totem pole which they will go on to make next week.

The children have continued to impress Mr Reeves this week in Music and have now moved on to learning a 2 part piece of music.

  • Literacy – The children need to practise the words and actions to go with their text map of the fictional news report inspired by the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.  We have also sent the written report home as well so the children can remind themselves of the words should they forget.  It would be fantastic if you could watch your child perform the text map as this will really help them to remember the words.
  • Maths – Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have subtraction activity that the children can complete using either the expanded or compact method (please see the sticker on your child’s homework for further information).  Mrs Scannell’s group have questions relating to the place value work they covered this week.
  • Reading – Please listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and record any reading that they do in their journals.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great weekend!
