Year 4 Week 15 2015

Welcome back!  We hope that you had an enjoyable Easter break.  The children have come to back to school raring to go and eager for what is in store for the term ahead!

Talk partner work in Literacy
This week in Literacy, there has been a spelling, punctuation and grammar focus. We have revised what adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, connectives and conjunctions are.  We have thought of examples of these and used them when creating sentences. The children have also worked hard to remember the correct use of different types of punctuation in sentences and had fun being punctuation detectives!

In Maths this week, we have been using the written column method for addition. We have used the expanded method to solve 3-digit or 4-digit addition calculations and some children have moved onto using the compact method to add 4-digit numbers. When adding 4-digit numbers, the answers have been greater than 10,000 and the children have needed to ‘carry’ from the 1s, 10s or 100s. Some children were able to apply their skills and used the written method to solve 1-step and 2-step word problems.

The children enjoyed exploring and using the apparatus in our Gymnastics session this week. The children created some simple movement sequences that linked a way of travelling with a balance. The children then worked with partner to create a short sequence that they ‘performed’ for their classmates, making sure that their timing was perfect; their balances were strong and tense and their control of movements was good.
Anyone for tennis
A glorious afternoon of sunshine meant when we had our first tennis session outside this week. A great time was had by all and the children have begun to become familiar with the skills involved in tennis through lots of games.
We will endeavour to go outside for our Games sessions, (Weather permitting), so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit with them - T-shirt, shorts/ jogging bottoms, trainers, socks & a jumper/fleece.

Please remind your children that their kits should be brought to school on a Monday ready for the week ahead.

Maths – The children have some 3-digit or 4-digit addition calculations to complete.
Please ensure that this is completed and returned to school no later than Thursday 23rd April.
Reading – Please continue to listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and either your children or the parents record any reading that they do in their journals.
Spellings - Your child will bring home a new set of spelling words to learn on Monday. - Please ensure that your child returns their yellow spelling folder on a Friday.

Thank you for your continued support.
