Year 4 Week 25 2015

Feelin’ hot hot hot! – It’s been incredibly hot this week and it’s been reassuring to see so many of the children with drinks bottles, a sun hat and sun cream with them in school. Please can you ensure that your child has these items with them every day.

The children worked hard on their Shakespeare projects. It was clear to see a lot of effort went into their work and the children presented their work to the rest of the class brilliantly.
The children are continuing to enjoy their Shakespeare Drama sessions with Mrs Hood. We have been working with different scenes from Romeo and Juliet, and as well as lots of different exciting drama, we have also discussed the characters and been interpreting and understanding the language used.

Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have been VERY busy in Maths this week. We have been using place value to add and subtract 0.1 and 0.01 to and from decimal numbers. The children have also been revising equivalent fractions and writing fractions with different denominators that total 1 and have also been starting to recognise and write decimal and fraction equivalents for ½, ¼ and ¾. Finally this week, the children have used coordinates to plot points and draw polygons.
Miss Graham’s group have recapped the counting up method using a blank number line to solve subtraction questions and are now looking at the expanded column method for subtraction.

In Literacy, we have been finding out about homophones – words that are spelled differently, have different meanings but sound the same, (where/wear, hear/here, brake/break etc). Working in pairs, the children investigated a variety of different homophones and during discussions were able to identify the meanings of each pair of words.

With Mr Fidler, the children have completed the construction of the second story for their Tudor houses. Just the roof structure and finally assembly of the house to go, then we can start creating our miniature Tudor village!

Homework
Maths – Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have been allocated a game on www.activelearnprimary.co.uk called ‘Robot Blaster’. The children have to add and subtract 0.1 and 0.01 to and from decimal numbers and find the creature that has the correct answer.
The children have also been asked to play ‘Billy Bug and his Quest for Grub’ – a coordinates game on http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/BillyBug/bugcoord.html - How long will it take you to feed Billy 10 times? – Children should write their completion times in their journals.
Miss Graham’s group have some Maths challenge sheets to complete.
Spellings - Your child will bring home a new set of spelling words to learn on Tuesday. - Please ensure that your child returns their yellow spelling folder on a Friday.
Music – Please practice the piece of music sent home this week, as well as ‘The Streets of London’ - Daily guitar practice for 10-15 minutes please!
