Welcome back! - We’re already at the end of the second week and what a busy time it’s already been. The children have settled back into the school routine quickly and have shown a real enthusiasm to learn!
This week in Literacy, we have begun our unit of work on instructions. We have evaluated different types of instructions to decide how effective they are and what improvements could be made to them.
In Maths, we have started working in our maths groups. This week, Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have been working on the place value of 4-digit numbers, including comparing them and locating them on a blank number line. We have also worked on our mental addition skills when adding pairs of 2-digit numbers. Miss Hart’s group have also been adding numbers mentally, particularly focussing on using number bonds to help us!
Our topic this term is The Romans and this week we have found out about the founding of Rome according to the legend of the story of Romulus and Remus.
With Mr Fidler in Art, the children designed and made some miniature Roman soldiers to form our very own Roman army!
We’d like to take the opportunity to let you know the days that different ‘events’ will be taking place during the week at school:
· Tuesday – PE – Please ensure that your child has the appropriate PE kit with trainers that fit in school for this day. Girls with long hair will need it tied back for our PE sessions.
· Thursday – Forest Schools – Each and every Thursday, we will be going to Forest School. The children will need their Forest Schools kit on this day. A leaflet about Forest Schools containing a kit list was sent home last week.
· Friday – The children will bring home a piece of Maths homework each Friday. This needs to be completed and returned to school the following Friday unless otherwise stated. The homework will be related to the work completed in class during the week to help consolidate the children’s learning.
· Tuesday – A new list of spellings will be sent home (in a red plastic folder) for the children to learn every Tuesday. The spellings are in line with the Year 3 & 4 list of spelling words taken from the National Curriculum and will have been the focus of the spelling session in class on a Tuesday. We will also be practising and learning the same set of words throughout the week in school in preparation for a spelling quiz on a Friday morning. The spelling folder needs to be returned to school each Friday.
Please can we ask that you support your child when they are working on homework activities, in particular ensuring that care and time is taken over it and any writing is neat with letters correctly formed and joins of letters being practised.
Homework for this week:
Maths - Both groups have had a game allocated to them. Mrs Pond-Barrett’s group have ‘Smack the Shack’ to play and Miss Hart’s group have ‘Bop a Bird’ to play!
Spellings - A new set of spelling words to learn will be sent home on Tuesday.
Reading - Please ensure that your child reads every day for at least 10 minutes. It can be their home reader, a library book, a comic, a book from home, etc etc!
Thank you for your support.
Have a lovely weekend.
