About Bielefeld School

Bielefeld School is located on the southern edge of the historic city, close to the Teutoburg Forest and Hills, in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany.

Our Children

The school has approximately 150 children on roll, between the ages of 3 and 11 years.

The Staff

The children, of British soldiers and civil servants largely, follow the UK National Curriculum and are taught by a team of UK qualified, primary age range teachers. These teachers are experienced in military 'ways' and benefit from excellent resources and in-service training.

The teaching staff is supported by able assistants, some of whom work with classes, and a few work with individual children. Again, our learning support assistants (LSA) and Key Workers are well trained and highly experienced.

As well as the teaching and learning staff, the school has talented administrators and site management specialists.

The School Buildings

The Older Block

The older, former barrack, block

The school comprises of a well-converted former barrack block, which provides a Foundation Stage 2 (Reception) setting, as well as 12 x Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classrooms. The block also provides group work areas and 2 x well equipped computer suites.

Every classroom has an interactive whiteboard and an allocation of personal computers.

The block has 2 floors and numerous flights of stairs, which provide the staff and children alike with regular aerobic exercise! The Army Welfare Service's Youth Club is housed in the attic. The first floor houses a dedicated Science classroom.

On the ground floor, a small gymnasium and kitchen provide further exercise and domestic science opportunities. The ground floor also houses various managers' and administrators' offices.

The Walk Way

The Covered Walk Way

A covered walk way leads between the barrack block and a newer block. Off the walkway runs the School Hall and Kitchen, the Staff Room and the school's Conference Room.

Three playgrounds, of varying sizes, also run off the walkway. The playgrounds have a variety of permanently installed play equipment, ranging from sports 'cages' to climbing frames.

Smaller play resources, like balls and skipping ropes, are also available.

Further Afield

Our Yurt and the Chicken Run (left)

Further afield, lie our grass sports pitches, the barrack's all-weather pitches and Forest School facilities, including a yurt, a fire pit and our chickens.

The Newer Block

The newer, purpose built, block

Our Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery) Setting is housed on the ground floor of the newer block. This setting, like the one for FS2, has facilities for playing outside, on a free flow basis, in all manner of creative ways.

On the upper floor of the newer block, the school has a dedicated Art teaching room, several rooms dedicated to teaching music and facilities to teach a Modern Foreign Language: German. We have specialist teachers who visit the school regularly to provide tuition in the piano, as well as string and brass instruments, and German.

Bielefeld School is a very well resourced, happy primary school that provides its children with the very best of British Education, in a wonderful host country: Germany.
